Durham Client Services Office Suggests, “It’s Time To Host A Food Drive!”
Contact:
Camille Sampino, Nutrition Program Coordinator–Durham Office

919.596.9898 x304

Rising food and fuel prices have amplified the pattern of less and less food in our nation’s food banks and pantries … and here in the Triangle, at the Alliance’s food pantries in Wake and Durham Counties, we are facing the same dilemma. We have seen a significant decline in resources from our partners at the Food Bank of North Carolina and the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle—while there continues to be an increase in demand.

The Alliance food pantries need your help! There are two ways you can help: join us for Myrtle Beach Drag Bingo on July 19 at Raleigh Little Theatre OR sponsor a food drive.

NON-PERISHABLE items that are most needed are:

  • Canned tuna, chicken or salmon

  • Canned stew, soup, ravioli, pork and beans

  • Hamburger Helper or Tuna Helper

  • Canned fruits and vegetables

  • Juices

  • Starches: like pasta, rice, mac & cheese, dry beans, potato mixes, and pasta salads

  • Personal care items: like toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, razors, and deodorant

AARP-NC Reaches out to LGBT Community

AARP-NC, dedicated to issues of quality of life, social change, information dissemination, advocacy, and service, is reaching out to the LGBT community. NC staff members are exploring the potential of developing a new intentional group/chapter with a focus on issues and concerns of North Carolina’s LGBT community. AARP-NC hopes that this outreach opportunity builds new roads to and for the LGBT community. AARP envisions our society as one in which everyone lives and fulfills goals and dreams with dignity and purpose. While AARP is nonpartisan and does not endorse candidates, it strives to educate the public on issues effecting mid-life and older adults and lobbies at the federal and state levels (see www.dividedwefail.org). Free AARP publications and programs, workshops, and seminars offered by staff and volunteers cover a wide range of topics from caregiver education and empowerment, driver safety, money management, tax-aide, livable and senior friendly communities, and healthy behaviors to fraud protection, mature work force, and emergency preparedness. AARP-NC hopes to embrace individuals and families in a community heretofore unreached, because at AARP, diversity and inclusion are not initiatives but a way of life. For more information, visit www.aarp.org/nc and/or contact Suzanne LaFollette-Black (919-508- 0269; SBlack@aarp.org), Greg Tanner (919-508-0273; GTanner@aarp.org), or David Kerley (919-508-0264; DKerley@aarp.org).

Works of Heart's Andria Linn Completes Wall of Hope Mural

Works of Heart contributing artist Andria Linn ( http://www.andrialinn.com/ ) has completed a 16'X16' mural for the Threshold Clubhouse Wall of Hope in downtown Durham. "Courage to Reveal, Courage to Heal" celebrates positive contributions of adults with mental illness. Andria has contributed to Works of Heart since 2004.

Threshold is based on the Clubhouse Rehabilitation model founded more than 40 years ago, and since opening in 1985 has assisted more than 150 Durham County residents with mental and persistent illness through their membership in Threshold.

Andria says, "I want this mural to create a stronger awareness of mental illness, so people understand that it's not something that needs running from, but that needs to be addressed, embraced and understood."

Works of Heart and AASC are pleased to congratulate Andria on her continued and generous committment to her community and to Threshold for their incredible work.
